Cali Combat Systems Martial Art Systems & Sub-Systems

KALI-SILAT MOTION

KALI - ESKRIMA - ARNIS

Kali (In the West), Eskrima, and Arnis are umbrella terms for the traditional martial arts of the Philippines that emphasize weapon based fighting with sticks, knives and other bladed weapons, firearms, and various improvised weapons. Teaching defensive movements, footwork, blocks, disarms, and much more. Many Military, Police and Security Agencies around the world are now learning the Filipino Martial Arts due to the effectiveness of the techniques. It also includes hand-to-hand combat and weapon disarming techniques. Kali students start their instruction by learning to fight with weapons and only advance to empty-hand training once the stick and knife techniques have been sufficiently mastered. This is in contrast to most other well-known Asian martial arts but it is justified by the principle that bare-handed moves are acquired naturally through the same exercises as the weapon techniques, making muscle memory an important aspect of the teaching. It is also based on the obvious fact that an armed person who is trained has the advantage over a trained unarmed person and serves to condition students to fight against armed assailants.

Most systems of Kali apply a single set of techniques for the stick, knife, and empty hands, a concept sometimes referred to as motion grouping. Since the weapon is seen as simply an extension of the body, the same angles and footwork are used either with or without a weapon. The reason for this is probably historical, because tribal warriors went into battle armed and only resorted to bare-handed fighting after losing their weapons. Many systems begin training with two weapons, either a pair of sticks or a stick and a wooden knife. These styles emphasize keeping both hands full and never moving them in the same direction, which trains practitioners to become ambidextrous. For example, one stick may strike the head while the other hits the arm. Such training develops the ability to use both limbs independently, a skill which is valuable even when working with one weapon. A core concept and distinct feature of Filipino martial arts is the Third Hand Principle (or Live Hand). Even when a practitioner wields only one weapon, the extra hand is used to control, trap or disarm an opponent’s weapon and to aid in blocking, joint locking, and manipulation of the opponent or other simultaneous motions such as biceps destruction with the live hand.

The Filipino Martial Arts taught at Cali Combat Systems are drawn from the instructors whom Sifu Jeremiah Giehl has spent his time training under with influences such as Guro Dan Inosanto, Sifu Paul Vunak, Tuhon Apolo Ladra, Guro Burton Richardson, Guro David Seiwert, Guro Daniel Sullivan and Guro Ron Balicki among many others.

INOSANTO-LACOSTE KALI

Is the weapons portion of the art. It allows us to deal with Weapons and Multiple Opponents efficiently. Kali - this is our Knife and Stick Fighting curriculum. You will learn how to defend against a Blade and how to use one very efficiently. The art we practice is also referred to as the Filipino Martial Arts or FMA. The Philippines has long been thought of as the epicenter of Weapons based Martial Arts. The Filipinos were able to defeat the Spanish with their relatively crude Sticks and Edged Weapons when the Spanish Conquistadores first attempted to invade the Philippines. The Spanish were forced to return to Europe and bring back guns and black powder to defeat the Filipinos. These weapons based systems were being used effectively to defeat invaders as recently as WW2 when they were employed with great success against the Japanese forces. The Filipino martial arts are known by many names but most commonly Kali, Arnis or Eskrima. Kali is an ancient word that serves as an umbrella term for all the Filipino martial arts. The word itself translates as the study of “Body Motion”. Although the base of the system is in Weaponry, its Empty-Hand systems feature some of the most sophisticated techniques and training methods in existence.

The Weaponry training covers a wide spectrum featuring Stick, Blade and Knife as well as Flexible Weapons and Weapons of Opportunity. We train Edged and Blunt weapons (Single Stick, Double Sticks, Single Knife) in Three Impact Weapons Ranges – Corto, Medio, Largo. We also cover Panantukan, Mano-Mano, Destructions, and Dumog. We train to think on Three Levels - we study Chess while others are fighting playing in Checkers mode, they trade off blow for blow, while we are working to develop a strategy to constantly move and attack all the while having a solid O.C.R. game plan. Along with Attacks you are taught Counters to the attacks - responses, and Recounters to each Counter. You develop the ability to think at least three levels ahead in a fight. We have talked about this in class. We use the acrostic OCR which stands for Offence - Counter - Recounter Offense. We attack Before, During, and After. Once an altercation starts it's always your turn. If they give you a knife, you disarm and give back generously. We use C.O.M.B.A.T. as an accronym for "Counter On Motion Before Attack Time." We train to be able to fight at least Three Opponents. We train for multiple opponents. You don’t spend too much time on any one opponent. And you never sacrifice yourself on the ground, we bite, fight and stand up.

According to Guro Dan: "In the field of strategic Knife Defense, the Pekiti-Tirsia System of Kali is the most progressive, practical and sophisticated system of Tactical Knife Self-Defense and Edged Weapon awareness that I have ever encountered." - Guro Dan Inosanto

PEKITI-TIRSIA KALI

Officially founded in 1897 by Grand Master Conrado Tortal. Pekiti-Tirsia was reserved in secret as a family system to defend the Tortal land until the art was brought to the U.S. in 1972 by Grand Master Leo Tortal Gaje Jr., the grandson of Conrado Tortal and heir to the Pekiti-Tirsia System. Since then, Pekiti-Tirsia Kali has expanded worldwide and influenced the creation of dozens of off-shoot combat systems. Pekiti-Tirsia Kali is a highly effective close-quarters fighting art indigenous to the Visayan region of the Philippines. Based on tactics and strategies derived from edged weapons, Pekiti-Tirsia Kali is a complete system incorporating both weapons and empty hands methods. Designed for both single and multiple attackers, Pekiti-Tirsia is an ancient art that has evolved to stay relevant for modern combat and self-defense scenarios. Pekiti-Tirsia is proven effective in combat and invaluable for preparing Operators of the law enforcement and military community. Pekiti-Tirsia is the official martial arts combat system of the Philippine Marine Corps and is the only Filipino Martial Arts system instructed to all Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). Pekiti-Tirsia Kali is also the official martial arts system of the elite Special Action Force (SAF) of the Philippine National Police (PNP). Internationally, it has been taught to thousands of police and military Special Operations personnel in the United States, Europe, India, Russia and across Asia.

The Pekiti-Tirsia Kali taught at Cali Combat Systems is drawn from the instructors whom Sifu Jeremiah Giehl has spent his time training under with influences such as Tuhon Apolo Ladra (Tri-V, iKali - Combat Blade, Warrior Kali - Double Stick - Knife Defense), Guro Dan Inosanto (Pekiti-Tirsia Kali).

PANANTUKAN SILAT

Silat is from Indonesia and parts of the Philippines. It is a fast, brutal while keeping your opponent off balance for devastating take down effects. Silat has style of Ground Fighting (dumog) which consists of breaking the opponent’s balance (body manipulation), takedowns, armbars, and controlling techniques on the ground.

The Maphilindo Silat taught at Cali Combat Systems is drawn from the instructors whom Sifu Jeremiah Giehl has spent his time training under with influences such as Guro Dan Inosanto (Madjiphat, Maphilindo), Guro Burton Richardson (KunTao, Silat for the Street), Guro Daniel Sullivan (KunTao, Harimau), Guro David Seiwert (KunTao) and Guro Ron Balicki (Maphilindo, Harimau, Mande Muda) among many others.

Maphilindo Silat

Silat is a loose term for a weapons based and empty hand martial art found in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Southern Philippines. It is known for its off balancing and sweeping motions. There are literally hundreds of Silat systems throughout the Malay Archipelago with different characteristics, weapons and techniques. As a martial art it is very closely related to Kali. The Sydney Kali Academy teaches Madjapahit Silat which combines elements of • Indonesian Silat • Malaysian Bersilat • Filipino Silat. The Majapahit Empire once included all of Southeast Asia (1292 to 1389) and spanned two thirds of the circumference of the globe. The exotic martial arts of this region are vast and diverse. Guro Dan Inosanto, to honour his Silat instructors, founded Maphilindo Silat, basing it on the various systems of Silat he has studied under Silat masters from Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia, including Herman Suwanda and Edgar Sulite. The “Ma” comes from the Malaysian influence found in Maphilindo Silat. The “Phil” is, from the Philipino influence and finally, the “Indo” derives from its Indonesian influences. Maphilindo Silat is essentially a counter fighting style and incorporates empty-hand techniques along with the use of such weapons as the short stick and sarong. The general idea is to manipulate and destruct a part, parts, or the whole of an opponent’s body in a minimal period of time. This goal is achieved by a flow of techniques and movement through the phases of entering, takedown and finishing. The emphasis here is on the concept of flow, which is the smooth transition through a series of movements or techniques. Silat taught at Cali Combat Systems includes the use of weapons and focuses on entering follow ups and finishes using minimal effect with maximum output. Our classes are structured to give students a strong progression with an emphasis on drilling positions, techniques and situations both standing and on the ground.

KUNTAO KALI-SILAT

KunTao Kali-Silat is our Eastern Asian (the Filipino and India based) Martial Arts program that includes influences from Kali (Inosanto-LaCoste Method, Pekit Tirsia Kali, Regino Ilustrisimo), Dynamic Fighting Arts Kali-KunTao (Dekiti Tirsia Kali, Balintiwak, Dumog, Panantukan, Kuntao Silat), Inosanto Silat (Mixed Silat, Maphilindo Silat, KunTao Silat, Maphilindo Martial Arts, Silat For The Street), and Panantukan (Filipino Dirty Boxing), to teach us weapons based combat and defense that relies heavily on Stick and Knife combat as foundation but does move into empty hand standing and grappling with weapons in contested and non-contested skills development training. This is a self defense oriented combat approach that starts off training with weapons: sticks and knives and then moves into empty hand and grappling (Dumog), includes stick fighting (sparring) and stick grappling. Kuntao (sometimes spelled Kuntaw, Kuntau, Kun Tao, even Kuen Tao among a few other ways in SE Asia, is an ancient Filipino warrior system considered to be indigenous to the Philippines that consists of a very vicious approach to engaging in a conflict. This of course, makes Kuntao extremely realistic, together with being a tremendously practical and efficient fighting martial art for modern time self-defense use. With various open hand striking methods and low line kicks combined with tearing at the eyes, groin, lips and throat along with nerve attacks and joint destruction’s. These are  followed up with a variety of grabbing methods to a choice of take downs and off balancing methods that make this style of Kuntao very unique and lately, in big demand all over the world.

PANANTUKAN - FILIPINO DIRTY BOXING

Panantukan is the Filipino art of boxing. Sometimes referred to as dirty boxing, Panantukan utilizes all parts of the body, hands, forearms, shoulders, hips, knees to attack an opponent. In the 1800’s, boxers like John Sullivan were boxing with arms extended and wide stances… when the Americans went over to the Philippines, they witnessed a whole new way of boxing… which came from knife fighting – You cannot stand with arms extended with a knife; everything was close in, small movements, an abundance of footwork and body mechanics. Panantukan is a fighting system aimed at maximum efficiency, uses the whole body and consists of upper and lower body striking techniques such as punches, elbows, head butts, shoulder strikes, low-line kicks and knee strikes to the legs, shins, and groin. Panantukan is not a sport, but rather a street-oriented fighting system. The techniques have not been adapted for safety or conformance to a set of rules for competition, thus it has a reputation as “dirty boxing.” The constant changes in the angle and level of the attack are another technical aspect of Panantukan. It is especially attractive due to its comprehensive training concepts, efficiency, speed, dynamics, timing, precision, and its typical flow of action. The training curriculum contains techniques, drills, combinations, kicks, take downs, locks, and sparring. Common targets include the biceps, triceps, eyes, nose, jaws, temples, groin, ribs, spine, and the back of the neck. We provide training in Panantukan "Filipino Dirty Boxing," Muay Thai Kickboxing, Jun Fan Kickboxing and Savate "French Kickboxing."

The Panantukan taught at Cali Combat Systems are drawn from the instructors whom Sifu Jeremiah Giehl has spent his time training under with influences such as Guro Dan Inosanto, Guro Daniel Sullivan, Guro David Seiwert, Sifu Paul Vunak and Guro Ron Balicki among many others

FIGHT RHYTHM JEET KUNE DO

JUN FAN JEET KUNE DO

Jeet Kune Do (截拳道; also “Jeet Kun Do," “JKD,” or “Jeet Kuen Do“) is a hybrid Martial Art and Philosophy developed in 1960/70s the late martial artist Bruce Lee, along with his student and protege Dan Inosanto, researched every martial art they could – what emerged was a compelling and completely new System of Training noted for its Simple, Direct, Efficient, Effective, and Non-Classical. Unlike more traditional martial arts, Jeet Kune Do is not fixed or patterned and is a philosophy with guiding thoughts. The mixing of the best techniques for striking, trapping and grappling from each art they studied, as well as developing training methods to perfect these, made this new ‘art’ a very dynamic and complete system renowned for its economy of motion. The style emphasizes minimal movement with maximum effect and extreme speed. The system works on the use of different ‘tools’ for different situations. These situations are broken down into ranges (kicking, punching, trapping and grappling) with techniques flowing smoothly between ranges. It is referred to as a “style without style” or “the art of fighting without fighting” as said by Bruce Lee himself. A lot of Jeet Kune Do taught these days are “watered down” material without regard to the founding principles of the founder, Bruce Lee. Through our training sessions you will have access to this material in its purest form, not to confine us but to liberate us, to share with others what we have learned, and to discover your Personal Expression of Sijo Bruce’s art.

It was named for the concept of interception, or attacking your opponent while he is about to attack. However, the name Jeet Kune Do was often said by Bruce Lee to be just a name. He himself often referred to it as “the art of expressing the human body” in his writings and in interviews. Through his studies Bruce came to believe that styles had become too rigid and unrealistic. He called martial art competitions of the day “dry land swimming”. He believed that combat was spontaneous and that a martial artist cannot predict it, only react to it, and that a good martial artist should “be like water,” moving fluidly without hesitation. In 2004, the Bruce Lee Foundation decided to use the name Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do (振藩截拳道) to refer to the martial arts system that Lee founded. “Jun Fan” was Lee’s Chinese given name. The Jun Fan Martial Arts are comprised of Jun Fan Kickboxing, Jun Fan Gung Fu and Jun Fan JKD Grappling. We offer Contemporary JKD & FMA (Concepts). The Contemporary JKD class sets out to expose you to training exercises and drills that will enable you to understand an opponent’s energy. Joint manipulations, traps, sweeps, strikes and an awareness of each range are the elements that favor the trained JKD practitioner.

"Man the creating individual is always more important than any established style or system" Bruce Lee

While Jun Fan is one tool that can be used to train the principles and concepts of JKD, it is not the only one. INTEGRATED GROUND FIGHTING SYSTEMS

JUN FAN JKD GRAPPLING ASSOCIATION

Founded by the late Sifu Larry Hartsell, an original student of Bruce Lee, renowned instructor, body guard to the stars, and founder of the Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do Grappling Association, Integrated Ground Fighting Systems is a hybrid system containing elements of several grappling arts studied and tested over the course of decades by “the premier Jeet Kune Do fighter of our time” (Sifu Dan Inosanto said about Sifu Larry Hartsell). By combining techniques from systems such as Jeet Kune Do, Judo, Russian Sambo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Greco-Roman and Freestyle Wrestling, Japanese Shooto, Filipino Dumog, Indonesian Silat and Catch As Catch Can Wrestling, Sifu Hartsell created a reality-based system focused primarily on fighting in the “grappling range”. Integrated Ground Fighting Systems is a no-nonsense system of grappling and ground fighting that can be used to supplement nearly any other martial art style or can be trained as a stand-alone “system” offering a complete and effective means of self-defense. We also combine Paul Vunaks KinaMutai asymmetrical grappling system as well. Sifu Jeramiah Giehl holds a Associate Level Instructor ranking through the Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do Grappling Association (Instructors Association) under Sifu John Doty (an original student of Sifu Larry Hartsell), he is a Black Belt in Combat JuJitsu and ShorinJi Ryu JuJitsu under Sensei David Tice, as well as being a Level 5 Professional Grappler, and has been actively training grappling arts for many years. He teaches an Integrated Ground Fighting System. No uniform (Gi) is required and sessions are open to students from any system that want to learn, however we will also train using clothes like shirts and hoodies in a way that is similar to Gi grappling at times. This system is offered exclusively at Cali Combat Systems.

INTEGRATED GROUND FIGHTING SYSTEMS

An integrated grappling (wrestling range, the Grappling range in Jeet Kune Do) system that consists of sensitivity in flowing with positioning, escapes, take-downs, throws, lockups and ground fighting from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Filipino Kun Tao, Filipino Dumog, Russian Sombo and Shoot wrestling (Shooto) and Catch Wrestling also known as “Catch-As-Catch-Can.” Integrated Grappling was a term formed before Mixed Martial Arts became part of the common vernacular. Integrated Ground Fighting Systems is the idea of Mixed Martial Arts or Blended Combat Systems. We operate under the premise in a fight that there is no-holds barred and bad guys will not fight limited on the concepts of one singular system instead there goal will be to demolish you by any means necessary and thus we train in a way that we will not limit the training regimen or style that we are willing to explore and use in combat. While most people go to the IGFS classes to improve their ground fighting abilities for tournaments – for self-defense purposes this type of grappling could be enhanced with the use of pinching and biting pressure points while utilizing elbows, knees and head-butts to weaken your opponent so leverage can be achieved that much easier. This is influenced by the South East Asian grappling methods that Jeramiah Giehl has been training in for many years. This particular range is very important to understand if you end up on the ground with a strong opponent. Size and strength is irrelevant due to the methods of training that develops proper technique and as long as it is constantly practiced. A useful and functional combination of grappling martial arts for Law Enforcement, bodyguards and correctional officers, bouncers, etc. The blending of these grappling styles a person to be able to take any extreme necessary for controlling an out of hand opponent with minimal harm if any at all to his or herself.

If you want to do a grappling or a no-holds-barred tournament, this class is real good for the development of ground skills for positions to submission or striking along with being able to escaping a wrestling situation. Moreover, it works fantastic for actual self-defense if you happen to end up on the ground during a confrontation. The ground is the last place you would want to be in an actual street confrontation. By understanding all the different grappling methods taught at CCS, you will definitely have a better perception of self-defense. For a one-on-one situation that you would like to control without actually having to do your opponent or your self any harm if possible. This is good knowledge to have if you just want to control and hold down an aggressive person for whatever reason. If you are doing a Mixed Martial Art (MMA) tournament fighting, grappling knowledge is a definite must have. That has been well proven over the years in No Holds Barred matches (now called MMA fighting., Weakness in grappling range has been recognized by many martial artists now a days and many learned the hard way.

For the Integrated Ground Fighting Systems class, everyone starts off in different ways, depending on the predetermined lesson plan that day. Ab work is always done, actually by popular demand, especially in that particular class. Many different ab exercises that are related to various submissions drills that are done to ensure tightness with each technique initiated. Positioning is usually gone over in detail depending on the level of people training at the time. Higher levels develop riding skills from position to position by regularly wrestling as a result of just flowing with each other. Submission drills are also performed in large amounts, which not only develops very good submission skills, but also is a great cardio and endurance exercise with good strong technique. Isolation wrestling by trying to escape each position while your partner is trying to hold you in position is another great way to develop a strong ride and a firm understanding of position as well as the sensitivity to feel the openings for escape or move to another position.

The areas to understand, which will give you a better idea of what takes place in the Integrated Grappling Systems as taught at the CCS are as follows:

  • Takedowns and throws

  • Counters and reversals to throws and takedowns

  • Strong and tight positions and transitions without the use of strength

  • Feeling when to flow from position to position (good kinesthetic perception)

  • Prevention of each position (again good kinesthetic perception)

  • Escape from each position

  • Submissions from every position with understanding of being able to flow to alternative locks

  • Submission counters

  • Position counters

  • Position reversals

The understanding of where and when to bite or pinch with eye gouging if ever needed for clench range street oriented self defense purposes. The use of different types of strikes in different grappling positions that cause real damage when used properly with skill (real good for Mixed Martial Arts or MMA training). How to defend strikes in the clench for both, stand up clench or on the ground (also very useful for MMA training and certainly, self defense purposes). Fight training for mixed martial arts (MMA), Jeet Kune Do/Muay Thai/Grappling.
