"There isn’t any difference between Jeet Kune Do, Original Jeet Kune Do and Jeet Kune Do Concepts. Whatever you want to call it. It’s the same. To understand the JKD Concept, you have to be trained in the original JKD or Jeet Kune Do that Bruce Lee trained. As he says, JKD is a path to personal enlightenment.” - Guro Dan Inosanto

Jeet Kune Do (截拳道; also “Jeet Kun Do," “JKD,” or “Jeet Kuen Do“) is a hybrid Martial Art and Philosophy developed in 1960/70s the late martial artist Bruce Lee, along with his student and protege Dan Inosanto, researched every martial art they could – what emerged was a compelling and completely new System of Training noted for its Simple, Direct, Efficient, Effective, and Non-Classical. Unlike more traditional martial arts, Jeet Kune Do is not fixed or patterned and is a philosophy with guiding thoughts. The mixing of the best techniques for striking, trapping and grappling from each art they studied, as well as developing training methods to perfect these, made this new ‘art’ a very dynamic and complete system renowned for its economy of motion. The style emphasizes minimal movement with maximum effect and extreme speed. The system works on the use of different ‘tools’ for different situations. These situations are broken down into ranges (kicking, punching, trapping and grappling) with techniques flowing smoothly between ranges. It is referred to as a “style without style” or “the art of fighting without fighting” as said by Bruce Lee himself. A lot of Jeet Kune Do taught these days are “watered down” material without regard to the founding principles of the founder, Bruce Lee. Through our training sessions you will have access to this material in its purest form, not to confine us but to liberate us, to share with others what we have learned, and to discover your Personal Expression of Sijo Bruce’s art.

It was named for the concept of interception, or attacking your opponent while he is about to attack. However, the name Jeet Kune Do was often said by Bruce Lee to be just a name. He himself often referred to it as “the art of expressing the human body” in his writings and in interviews. Through his studies Bruce came to believe that styles had become too rigid and unrealistic. He called martial art competitions of the day “dry land swimming”. He believed that combat was spontaneous and that a martial artist cannot predict it, only react to it, and that a good martial artist should “be like water,” moving fluidly without hesitation. In 2004, the Bruce Lee Foundation decided to use the name Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do (振藩截拳道) to refer to the martial arts system that Lee founded. “Jun Fan” was Lee’s Chinese given name. The Jun Fan Martial Arts are comprised of Jun Fan Kickboxing, Jun Fan Gung Fu and Jun Fan JKD Grappling. We offer Contemporary JKD & FMA (Concepts). The Contemporary JKD class sets out to expose you to training exercises and drills that will enable you to understand an opponent’s energy. Joint manipulations, traps, sweeps, strikes and an awareness of each range are the elements that favor the trained JKD practitioner.

"Man the creating individual is always more important than any established style or system" Bruce Lee

Cali Combat Systems is an official affiliate school of the Progressive Fighting Systems. The organization founded by world renowned martial artist Sifu Paul Vunak in the mid 1980's centers around Contemporary Jeet Kune Do and Kali. Sifu Paul Vunak has trained Under Guro Dan Inosanto as one of his top instructors for over 30 years. Guro Inosanto was Bruce Lee's Protégé, training partner and best friend. Also Mr. Vunak was one of the first people to train Gracie Jiu Jitsu in America, and a proud student of Rorion, Royce, Royler, and Rickson Gracie. Progressive Fighting Systems is an organization and a system of combat created by Paul Vunak, a senior student of Dan Inosanto. Inosanto is the protege of the legendary Bruce Lee and the only person ever certified by Lee to teach Jeet Kune Do. Techniques were cho sen for efficiency and realism and include Biting, Eye Gouging, Striking with the Head, Elbows, Knees and Gound Fighting. Bruce Lee's JKD serves as the foundation for PFS which has evolved to include Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Thai Boxing. PFS is an extremely effective street fighting system that includes components for both self preservation and self perfection within a mixed martial art matrix. This system was developed by Navy SEAL combat instructor Paul Vunak can turn anyone into a potent hand-to-hand fighter in a short period of time. PFS has been utilized by the US Navy SEALs, DEA, CIA, FBI, and police agencies around the world.

"The winner of a street fight is not the person with the most beautiful techniques, but the person with the best attributes" Guro Paul Vunak.

We offer Contemporary JKD & FMA (Functional JKD). The Contemporary JKD class sets out to expose you to training exercises and drills that will enable you to understand an opponent’s energy. Joint manipulations, traps, sweeps, strikes and an awareness of each range are the elements that favor the trained JKD practitioner. Contemporary JKD and Kina Mutai (the Filipino Art of Biting & Eye Gouging) help equalize differences in size and strength between an attacker and a victim. Students are taught to survive being taken to the ground, a common component of most fights. Our Jeet Kune Do Program is designed to meet the needs and challenges of today’s active adult. From a seasoned Martial Artist to the adult who is brand new to Martial Arts… We’ve got you covered. Many of our Jeet Kune Do students have attributed success in their personal careers to the self-discipline and mental focus gained through their martial arts training. Contemporary Jeet Kune Do (CJKD) is the art passed down from Bruce Lee and Dan Inosanto through Paul Vunak and many other martial art masters that blend many diverse training methods and styles into a single system. It is an art that allows the practitioner to prepare for any kind of encounter with any number of opponents in any conceivable combat scenarios. Contemporary Jeet Kune Do incorporates 6 main arts as the basic platform and also uses many different supplementary arts to make it a complete and comprehensive self-defense system. These arts and practices have been researched in the ring and proven in the world of street-fighting and on battlefields of military combat around the world.

The Jeet Kune Do taught at Cali Combat Systems is drawn from the instructors who Sifu Jeremiah Giehl has spent his time training under with influences such as Guro Dan Inosanto, Sifu Paul Vunak, Sifu Tim Tackett, Guro Burton Richardson, Guro Ron Balicki, and Guro Daniel Sullivan among many others.

“Research your own experience,

Reject what is useless, and

Add what is specifically your own."

Kali (In the West), Eskrima, and Arnis are umbrella terms for the traditional martial arts of the Philippines that emphasize weapon based fighting with sticks, knives and other bladed weapons, firearms, and various improvised weapons. Teaching defensive movements, footwork, blocks, disarms, and much more. Many Military, Police and Security Agencies around the world are now learning the Filipino Martial Arts due to the effectiveness of the techniques. It also includes hand-to-hand combat and weapon disarming techniques. Kali students start their instruction by learning to fight with weapons and only advance to empty-hand training once the stick and knife techniques have been sufficiently mastered. This is in contrast to most other well-known Asian martial arts but it is justified by the principle that bare-handed moves are acquired naturally through the same exercises as the weapon techniques, making muscle memory an important aspect of the teaching. It is also based on the obvious fact that an armed person who is trained has the advantage over a trained unarmed person and serves to condition students to fight against armed assailants.

Most systems of Kali apply a single set of techniques for the stick, knife, and empty hands, a concept sometimes referred to as motion grouping. Since the weapon is seen as simply an extension of the body, the same angles and footwork are used either with or without a weapon. The reason for this is probably historical, because tribal warriors went into battle armed and only resorted to bare-handed fighting after losing their weapons. Many systems begin training with two weapons, either a pair of sticks or a stick and a wooden knife. These styles emphasize keeping both hands full and never moving them in the same direction, which trains practitioners to become ambidextrous. For example, one stick may strike the head while the other hits the arm. Such training develops the ability to use both limbs independently, a skill which is valuable even when working with one weapon. A core concept and distinct feature of Filipino martial arts is the Third Hand Principle (or Live Hand). Even when a practitioner wields only one weapon, the extra hand is used to control, trap or disarm an opponent’s weapon and to aid in blocking, joint locking, and manipulation of the opponent or other simultaneous motions such as biceps destruction with the live hand.

The Filipino Martial Arts taught at Cali Combat Systems are drawn from the instructors whom Sifu Jeremiah Giehl has spent his time training under with influences such as Guro Dan Inosanto, Tuhon Apolo Ladra, Guro Ron Balicki, Guro David Seiwert, Sifu Paul Vunak, Guro Daniel Sullivan and Guro Burton Richardson among many others.

Is the weapons portion of the art. It allows us to deal with Weapons and Multiple Opponents efficiently. Kali - this is our Knife and Stick Fighting curriculum. You will learn how to defend against a Blade and how to use one very efficiently. The art we practice is also referred to as the Filipino Martial Arts or FMA. The Philippines has long been thought of as the epicenter of Weapons based Martial Arts. The Filipinos were able to defeat the Spanish with their relatively crude Sticks and Edged Weapons when the Spanish Conquistadores first attempted to invade the Philippines. The Spanish were forced to return to Europe and bring back guns and black powder to defeat the Filipinos. These weapons based systems were being used effectively to defeat invaders as recently as WW2 when they were employed with great success against the Japanese forces. The Filipino martial arts are known by many names but most commonly Kali, Arnis or Eskrima. Kali is an ancient word that serves as an umbrella term for all the Filipino martial arts. The word itself translates as the study of “Body Motion”. Although the base of the system is in Weaponry, its Empty-Hand systems feature some of the most sophisticated techniques and training methods in existence.

The Weaponry training covers a wide spectrum featuring Stick, Blade and Knife as well as Flexible Weapons and Weapons of Opportunity. We train Edged and Blunt weapons (Single Stick, Double Sticks, Single Knife) in Three Impact Weapons Ranges – Corto, Medio, Largo. We also cover Panantukan, Mano-Mano, Destructions, and Dumog. We train to think on Three Levels - we study Chess while others are fighting playing in Checkers mode, they trade off blow for blow, while we are working to develop a strategy to constantly move and attack all the while having a solid O.C.R. game plan. Along with Attacks you are taught Counters to the attacks - responses, and Recounters to each Counter. You develop the ability to think at least three levels ahead in a fight. We have talked about this in class. We use the acrostic OCR which stands for Offence - Counter - Recounter Offense. We attack Before, During, and After. Once an altercation starts it's always your turn. If they give you a knife, you disarm and give back generously. We use C.O.M.B.A.T. as an accronym for "Counter On Motion Before Attack Time." We train to be able to fight at least Three Opponents. We train for multiple opponents. You don’t spend too much time on any one opponent. And you never sacrifice yourself on the ground, we bite, fight and stand up.

According to Guro Dan: "In the field of strategic Knife Defense, the Pekiti-Tirsia System of Kali is the most progressive, practical and sophisticated system of Tactical Knife Self-Defense and Edged Weapon awareness that I have ever encountered." - Guro Dan Inosanto

Officially founded in 1897 by Grand Master Conrado Tortal. Pekiti-Tirsia was reserved in secret as a family system to defend the Tortal land until the art was brought to the U.S. in 1972 by Grand Master Leo Tortal Gaje Jr., the grandson of Conrado Tortal and heir to the Pekiti-Tirsia System. Since then, Pekiti-Tirsia Kali has expanded worldwide and influenced the creation of dozens of off-shoot combat systems. Pekiti-Tirsia Kali is a highly effective close-quarters fighting art indigenous to the Visayan region of the Philippines. Based on tactics and strategies derived from edged weapons, Pekiti-Tirsia Kali is a complete system incorporating both weapons and empty hands methods. Designed for both single and multiple attackers, Pekiti-Tirsia is an ancient art that has evolved to stay relevant for modern combat and self-defense scenarios. Pekiti-Tirsia is proven effective in combat and invaluable for preparing Operators of the law enforcement and military community. Pekiti-Tirsia is the official martial arts combat system of the Philippine Marine Corps and is the only Filipino Martial Arts system instructed to all Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). Pekiti-Tirsia Kali is also the official martial arts system of the elite Special Action Force (SAF) of the Philippine National Police (PNP). Internationally, it has been taught to thousands of police and military Special Operations personnel in the United States, Europe, India, Russia and across Asia.

The Pekiti-Tirsia Kali taught at Cali Combat Systems is drawn from the instructors whom Sifu Jeremiah Giehl has spent his time training under with influences such as Tuhon Apolo Ladra (Tri-V, iKali - Combat Blade, Warrior Kali - Double Stick - Knife Defense), Guro Dan Inosanto (Pekiti-Tirsia Kali), Tuhon Jared Wihongi (Tri-V, Classical 64 Methods) and Tuhon Bill McGrath (Classical 64 Methods).

Silat is from Indonesia and parts of the Philippines. It is a fast, brutal while keeping your opponent off balance for devastating take down effects. Silat has style of Ground Fighting (dumog) which consists of breaking the opponent’s balance (body manipulation), takedowns, armbars, and controlling techniques on the ground.

The Maphilindo Silat taught at Cali Combat Systems is drawn from the instructors whom Sifu Jeremiah Giehl has spent his time training under with influences such as Guro Dan Inosanto (Madjiphat, Maphilindo), Guro Burton Richardson (KunTao, Silat for the Street), Guro Daniel Sullivan (KunTao, Harimau), Guro David Seiwert (KunTao) and Guro Ron Balicki (Maphilindo, Harimau, Mande Muda) among many others.

KunTao Kali-Silat is our Eastern Asian (the Filipino and India based) Martial Arts program that includes influences from Kali (Inosanto-LaCoste Method, Pekit Tirsia Kali, Regino Ilustrisimo), Dynamic Fighting Arts Kali-KunTao (Dekiti Tirsia Kali, Balintiwak, Dumog, Panantukan, Kuntao Silat), Inosanto Silat (Mixed Silat, Maphilindo Silat, KunTao Silat, Maphilindo Martial Arts, Silat For The Street), and Panantukan (Filipino Dirty Boxing), to teach us weapons based combat and defense that relies heavily on Stick and Knife combat as foundation but does move into empty hand standing and grappling with weapons in contested and non-contested skills development training. This is a self defense oriented combat approach that starts off training with weapons: sticks and knives and then moves into empty hand and grappling (Dumog), includes stick fighting (sparring) and stick grappling.

Panantukan is the Filipino art of boxing. Sometimes referred to as dirty boxing, Panantukan utilizes all parts of the body, hands, forearms, shoulders, hips, knees to attack an opponent. In the 1800’s, boxers like John Sullivan were boxing with arms extended and wide stances… when the Americans went over to the Philippines, they witnessed a whole new way of boxing… which came from knife fighting – You cannot stand with arms extended with a knife; everything was close in, small movements, an abundance of footwork and body mechanics. Panantukan is a fighting system aimed at maximum efficiency, uses the whole body and consists of upper and lower body striking techniques such as punches, elbows, head butts, shoulder strikes, low-line kicks and knee strikes to the legs, shins, and groin. Panantukan is not a sport, but rather a street-oriented fighting system. The techniques have not been adapted for safety or conformance to a set of rules for competition, thus it has a reputation as “dirty boxing.” The constant changes in the angle and level of the attack are another technical aspect of Panantukan. It is especially attractive due to its comprehensive training concepts, efficiency, speed, dynamics, timing, precision, and its typical flow of action. The training curriculum contains techniques, drills, combinations, kicks, take downs, locks, and sparring. Common targets include the biceps, triceps, eyes, nose, jaws, temples, groin, ribs, spine, and the back of the neck. We provide training in Panantukan "Filipino Dirty Boxing," Muay Thai Kickboxing, Jun Fan Kickboxing and Savate "French Kickboxing."

The Panantukan taught at Cali Combat Systems are drawn from the instructors whom Sifu Jeremiah Giehl has spent his time training under with influences such as Guro Dan Inosanto, Guro Daniel Sullivan, Guro David Seiwert, Sifu Paul Vunak and Guro Ron Balicki among many others

The Kali-Silat Academy of Motion is our Eastern Asian (the Filipino and India based) Martial Arts program that includes influences from Inosanto-LaCoste Kali, Maphilindo Martial Arts, Kali-KunTao Silat, Madjapahit Silat, Harimau Silat, Mande Muda Silat, Pekit Tirsia Kali (and Dekiti Tirsia Kali), Regino Ilustrisimo, Silat For The Street, and Panantukan "Filipino Dirty Boxing," to teach us weapons based combat and defense that relies heavily on Stick and Knife combat as foundation but does move into empty hand standing and grappling with weapons in contested and non-contested skills development training. This is a Self-Defense oriented combat approach that starts off training with Weapons: Sticks and Knives and then moves into Empty Hands (Panantukan) and Grappling (Dumog), includes Stick Fighting (sparring) and Stick Grappling. In our Kali-Silat Academy of Motion - Phase Classes students are taught the Ranges of Combat and how to easily flow from each range. Emphasizing the “Ranges of Combat.” Students are taught to confidently and with ease “Combat Flow” from Three Ranges:

Long Distance: Numerada

  • Projectile Weapons Range

  • Blunt Weapons Range

  • Edged Weapons Range

Middle Distance: Sumbrada Range

  • Kicking Range

  • Hand Range

Close Quarter: Hubud Range

  • Close Quarter Trapping Range

  • Clinch Grappling Range

  • Grappling or Ground Fighting Range

The proper Use of Weapons utilising Offense, Counter Offense and Recounter Offense ("defense is the other guys problem" - Tuhon Apolo Ladra) are taught in an easy to remember and efficient Method of Application. We also teach Gun Disarms and the Proper Use and Handling of Firearms. Movement is universal no one single style or system has it all. Students learn what works in a particular situation, against a particular opponent, and when another technique or series of techniques would be more practical and effective. Developed for “Mass Attack” (Multiple Opponents training to deal with Three Opponents) as well as Single Opponent confrontations, the training heightens student’s "Situational Awareness" of their surroundings and teaches them to use their environment as tools / "Weapons of Opportunity" of combat. Everyday Objects, such as Umbrellas, Books, Bandannas, etc., become effective means of Self-Defense in the hands of a properly trained individual. Use of left and right hand techniques develop ambidextrous coordination. Drills and techniques taught in a fluid, nonrestrictive manner allow students to enhance their natural attributes and improve their sense of timing, speed, awareness, balance, agility, and confidence. Classes are preferred small to provide the students with the individual attention needed to progress.

This fun and challenging class contains the base for your development here at CCS. Students are encouraged to work at their own pace. As you progress through the three levels of Phase One, you will begin to work on your body mechanics, endurance, sensitivity, coordination and technical base. You will improve your fitness and self-discipline, while developing your coordination and basic selfdefense capabilities in these fun high-energy classes. Our classes combine hands-on curriculum based experience with knowledge-based instruction - take a look at our offerings and contact Cali Combat Systems to learn more. The JKD-Kali Academy Phase Method is the teaching methodology we use to help the individual to express themselves honestly to make the Jun Fan Martial Arts their own. Studying different arts simultaneously is a great way to develop. Much like a university or college offers many course per semester we are a martial art university of sorts. Our curriculum covers six core fundamental methods that are essential to our system; Jeet Kune Do, Inosanto-LaCoste Kali, Maphilindo Silat, Jun Fan Gung Fu and Israeli Krav Maga.

In our Blended Arts Phase Program development is measured by progression through 6 phases and various sub-levels. The first 4 phases are curriculum and knowledge based while the last 2 phases are personal development phases. Only your level of interest, training time, personality, and ability will determine your progress through Phases 1-4 and beyond. We will begin to work on your body mechanics, endurance, sensitivity, coordination and technical base. An emphasis on the high percentage, highly functional basic areas of each art is emphasized. In this way a strong foundation for advanced growth is established. The goal is to learn to read and respond to your opponent’s offense, structure and energy without thinking. The drills and training methods in this Phase can be enjoyed, refined and developed over your lifetime and can be practiced at any age.  Our  curriculum  covers  6  primary  arts  or methods  that  are  absolutely  essential; Contemporary  JKD,  Inosanto-LaCoste  Kali, Maphilindo  Silat, Panantukan Dirty Boxing, Jun  Fan  Gung  Fu  and  Israeli  Krav  Maga.  We have  found  that  studying  different  arts simultaneously  is  a  great  way  to  develop overall  martial  arts  skills.  Each  art  seems  to help  the  assimilation  of  the  others.  As  these different  arts  mix  an  explosion  of  technique and  training  method  develops.  In  time  and after  a  student  develops  competency  in  each area  they  will  naturally  gravitate  towards  a specialty  that  fits  their  body  type,  training time,  personality,  life  experience,  etc.  We emphasize  that  all  the  methods  will  be  valid for some students at some time. You will learn to adapt to different opponents, styles, speeds and ranges. As your skills come together to represent the complete martial spectrum. Bruce Lee’s JKD concepts and philosophy guide you through advanced levels of Inosanto Kali, Jun Fan Gung Fu, Panantukan, Jun Fan Grappling, KunTao Silat and Israeli Krav Maga.

"Before I studied the art, a punch to me was just like a punch, a kick just like a kick." - Bruce Lee

This is what Bruce Lee called the "Primitive Stage." A punch is a punch, whether you have experience or none. Whether your a street fighter or have some natural fighting abilities or no holds barred (vale tudo) style fight understanding of combat ranges and weapons of the body. This is just natural tools you haven't trained them, there is no build up of muscle memory. You haven't started the scientific studies of researching your own experience. This is where you begin by learning and Sticking to the "Nucleus." When you come in your raw and primitive, you have primal instincts, free without limitation. This is the best place to start from. Come as an empty cup seeking to be filled up. Don't worry through training we will change this. We will begin to develop reflexes and muscle memory.

"Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow, or it can crash. Be water, my friend." - Bruce Lee

"After I learned the art, a punch was no longer a punch, a kick is no longer a kick." - Bruce Lee

"I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times." - Bruce Lee

"Now that I've understood the art, a punch is just like a punch, a kick just like a kick." Bruce Lee

"To me, ultimately, martial arts means honestly expressing yourself." - Bruce Lee

"Nowadays you don't go around on the street kicking people, punching people — because if you do (makes gun shape with hand), well that's it — I don't care how good you are." - Bruce Lee

Krav Maga has been adopted as the official Hand-to-Hand Combat System of the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces).
